Book V, “How Will I Survive?” – Excerpt – Text: Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17

Read the Book of Ruth

The Book of Ruth is a narrative about relationships.  The episodes in this narrative are about security and about a family trying to survive.  The story is about concerned individuals who in their own tragedies, misfortunes, loss, and grief, have come together and come to terms with what needs to be done to survive.  In our community and, particularly communities with residents who live in poverty, who earn only enough to “get by” or who live with the threat, and/or fear of losing their secure jobs, people have the general attitude of “I can’t help myself – how can I help you?”  If you identify with these dilemmas would the question be “how will I survive?”

We live in a nation that taxes the people to the hilt for the benefit of money-making corporations and the wealthy.  The wealthy and corporations benefit through tax breaks and reductions.  But, the congressional representatives will not provide its constituents with basic funding for health care, nutrition, and education or even recovery from disastrous devastations.

In the nation, the needs of the poor and left-out are not met.  It is a country that gets less aid from its own government than given to foreign lands.  Jobs are being outsourced to countries that produce many things for less cost without considering the many lost jobs of its own citizens.  Many of the politicians communicate to the public, their own constituents, that unemployment is low – a lie; unemployment is high!  Additionally, the administration, analyst, and the media do not tell the nation about all the people who have been out of work for so long, that they are not considered in the labor market statistics.
