Book VII, “Back-Up!” – Excerpt – 2 Kings 2:1-2; 6-14 (NRSV)

HRead 2 Kings 2:1-2; 6-14

There is a season when it is time to prepare and/or give responsibility to another who will pass on, administer, facilitate, and carry out the fundamentals, the values systems, the goals and objectives that will carry out the legacies that have been in the past, is now, and in the future is beneficial.

Many are in relationships that require you to prepare or teach someone else to assume a position or responsibility that you no longer will possess.  You  may be getting a promotion; preparing for a new assignment; getting married; getting older; retiring.  Whatever the situation or circumstance, the time comes when your responsibilities are to be carried out by someone else.  That transition might be voluntary or it might be involuntary; planned or forced ; welcomed or resisted!  Whatever the situation or circumstance, the transition will happen.  This process may be over many years, within a few months, a few weeks, a few days or hours.

  • Remember when your supervisor said to you, “I want you to help Joan learn the ropes, ” and before you knew it, Joan had your job?
  • Remember when you were informed that you would be transferred and was told the “before you leave, show Arthur everything you did?”
  • Remember when your parent became very ill and you had to assume the responsibility of taking care of all financial obligations?
  • Remember when you planned to become less involved in an organization and you needed to coach someone else to be the next leader?
  • Remember when you as the oldest sibling had to help and be the surrogate parent and care for your younger siblings?

These are just a few examples of what we know as “passing the baton” or “passing the mantle.”  None are exempted from experiencing this transition; however, all go through this process differently.  Some go though it willingly; some, enthusiastically; some, reluctantly.  Change is difficult; yet, change is necessary!  The fundamental values may be constant; but, the process may be different.  The only thing that is constant, is change!
