Book III, “What Now, He’s Not Here?” – Excerpt – Text: Mark 16:1-8

Read Mark 16:1-8

On Palm Sunday, the experiences of the crowd of people who gathered in Jerusalem, is similar to the experiences of contemporary Christians rushing or parading down the street to church with anticipation and great expectation of hearing and learning of Jesus.  Likewise, the crowd prepared for the day, waited to hear a Word from the Lord, and watched the ministry of Jesus – the man of Nazareth, the man of God who came to save Israel from oppression; the man of God who came to unveil the lies about weapons of mass destruction to initiate war or the destruction of people’s livelihood through monetary and property greed.

The crowd gathered to hear and be more informed about Jesus – the man known to some as “the King of kings who came to show the world to look to him and not presidents or prime ministers (high-jacked kings and pharaohs of this day).  They hastened to watch and listen to Jesus, the man known to others as Rabbi, the teacher with great authority and wisdom – not the teachers and preachers who claim to be conservative and compassionate but vote against programs that help the sick, the poor, the left out!  People anticipated Jesus, the Son of God who healed; who cast out demons; who fed thousands with little; the healer of diseases by his touch, freer of the imprisoned by his commands, and the disruptor of injustices including turning over the tables of the money-changers in the temple!

People waited and anticipated hearing about Jesus, the man who raised the dead; who came to resurrect and transform the spirit of his people who are tied up with destructive behavior, self-hatred, and victims of spy tactics in the name of “homeland security!”

In Jerusalem, all wanted to see – some who believed; some who were curious; some who were resistant; and, some who were furious?  All had great expectations of the coming of Jesus!  But, they subsequently learned that Jesus, the Son of God, who in his revolutionary ministry was subversive in his approach to society’s values, traditions, and leadership.  Jesus showed and taught them with clear and concise instructions as to what God’s great expectations were!
